'Wayside Bride', drawn from living testimony by Australian playwright Alana Valentine (The Sugar House, Parramatta Girls, Barbara and the Camp Dogs), marks its worldwide debut on the Belvoir stage from 2 April to 29 May 2022.
On a back street of Kings Cross, iconic Sydney institution the Wayside Chapel is a haven for the poor, the excluded, the misfits. It’s a place of faith and a place of love. And it’s a place where people declare their love – even when the rest of the world has turned you away.
For the first time in the theatre’s recent history, Belvoir will stage two ambitious productions in repertory. Presented as alternating performance of two plays, Alana Valentine’s brand-new 'Wayside Bride' and Caryl Churchill’s classic 'Light Shining in Buckinghamshire' feature the same cast, on the same set, written by two legendary women. Together “in rep”, they present a brilliant theatrical vision of the age-old struggle for a fairer society.
