The year is 1999. B*Witched, Aqua and the Spice Girls are all trading number one hits, while Prince sits back and relaxes having long since penned the anthem to launch a new millennium. But unbeknownst to them all the next big musical sensation is about to come from the most unlikely place: the Catholic church!
The Brothers Rapture is an original rap musical penned by Corey M. Glamuzina (Big Hoo-Haa Melbourne, Shakespeare Aliens, Death Boat), and follows two humble Irish priests who teach sex education to high school students. After stumbling upon the fact that presenting their pearls of wisdom through the medium of rap is a more effective means of communication than anything they'd tried previously, the two priests inadvertently become local media sensations - as viral as you could get in the days of dial-up internet. What follows is a whirlwind ascent to international rap stardom, with only the stern and virtuous Sister Riona Murphy in tow pulling the reins and keeping the brothers on the Godly path.
Prepare for a roller-coaster of lyrical madness and holy rhythmical revelations in this original rap musical exploring fame, identity, ego, hatred, acceptance, and polarity. There's songs about science, there's songs about religion, and there's songs about sex. International superstardom awaits! As long the pitfalls of fame and the restraints of the church don't tear them apart.
Having debuted at this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival The Brothers Rapture return for a three-night season at Melbourne's cabaret colosseum The Butterfly Club. The show features four of Melbourne's most established comedic performers, with writer Corey Glamuzina also playing the role of Brother Diarmuid Foley, and Kieran Bullock (Big Hoo-Haa Melbourne, IKEA WARS) playing Brother Shay O'Dea. Cassandra Hart (Ghostlight League, Shakespeare Aliens) excels as the matriarchal Sister Riona. The musical direction for the show was composed by local musical legend Matt Hadgraft.
